The planet is heating up. In fact, the last 7 years have been the warmest on record, as part of a long-term trend towards global warming. Scientists predict that the current record for hottest year will continue to be broken as the years go on.
While Earth Day is a great time to respect the planet we call home, highlight sustainability, and recognise the companies striving for carbon-neutral – perhaps it’s time that Earth Day is more than just one day on the corporate social media calendar.
Let’s take a look at why Earth Day has even become the phenomenon it is today. When Earth Day first began in 1970, it was a way of ensuring that governments took climate acts seriously, there were no Clean Air Acts, no EPA, and one American senator had had enough. From one necessity to another, Earth Day is now a way to remind businesses, both big and small, of their responsibility to the planet – how seriously they take that responsibility is up for debate.
No one needs to be reminded of just how serious climate change is with conversations around global warming at an all time high. Higher temperatures impact air quality, crop production and increase the spread of infectious diseases. There is also a massively increased risk and intensity of natural disasters – remember the wildfires in 2021? Not only that, but cities around the world flooded to extremes last year. There were 12 cyclones and heat-waves across the planet, and to add to that, people in Florida are running out of drinking water.
The time to step in as a planet and intervene has never been more urgent.
The good news is that there are people, politicians and businesses doing their bit to combat climate change. Earth Day is an opportunity for everyone around the world to join them, learning more about the serious dangers we face as a planet and how we can work to beat them on collective and individual levels. Organisations and individuals all around the world can get involved in Earth Day by holding events, joining or creating cleanups, planting trees, and a range of other options. For our team at MODMO, Earth Day is a reminder of the reason we do what we do. We want to be part of a more sustainable future by providing a viable two-wheel electric alternative to fossil-fueled cars for city commuters and other urban riders. This year, we went beyond and introduced Earth Week (which is still ongoing) to our audience, encouraging them to get out on their bikes more, and hopefully in their cars a little less. But this is just a small part of our commitment to sustainability.
We also aim to be as sustainable as possible in our production. We are working towards our sustainability goals, making significant changes in how our team operates all around the world, and how we get our products from A to B.
Earth Day may be over as far as the calendar is concerned, but to us, recognising our responsibility to our planet is an ongoing mission. So whether it’s an Earth Week, Month or Year, let’s try and make sure it’s not just one day.
